Signed in pencil by Jasper Johns lower right margin, with the copyright © Jasper Johns, 1969 on the lower right corner. Commissioned by Leo Castelli in 1969, John’s created “Flag” in green black and orange with the white dot in the center of the image that symbolizes John’s frustration with the Vietnam War. Substituting the iconic colors of the national American flag, white, red and blue, Johns incorporates the green which has connotations of the camouflage. The white dot symbolizes a bullet hole.
