Sam Francis often used Monoprinting, because Monoprints are considered the most painterly method among the printmaking techniques. Sam Francis' Monoprints were made by altering the type, color, and pressure of the ink in the printing creating unique results for each original print. For this composition "Untitled SFE - 009", there were 9 monoprint variations, 1 BAT, 4 Artist Proofs, 2 Trial Proofs, and 3 Color Trial Proofs. Each of these is a unique composition utilizing the same plate matrix and unique color combinations.
