Marc Chagall was born in a Hassidic community in Belarus in 1887. He learned the fundamentals of drawing in elementary school there. This place and time period are heavily referenced in his expressive, dream-like work. Chagall studied art at a private all-Jewish art school. He quickly refuted the popularity of realism in Russia at the time, in favor of his own personal expression. In 1911 Chagall worked alongside painters Fernand Léger and Apollinaire at an artists’ colony in Paris. There, his style moved even further away from realism and was influenced by cubism and fauvism. Chagall’s work incorporates a variety of styles and mediums, making pieces that radiate his personal experience.
Marc Chagall depicts his subjects intuitively, and emphasizes his personal relationship to his experiences living in Europe. Chagall incorporates imagery from his childhood in Russia, as well as aspects from his Jewish culture. Chagall’s “Bible Series” illustrates scenes from the Old Testament, and was completed in 1960. Chagall worked with a variety of mediums, and in addition to the paintings and drawings he is known for, created stained-glass, book illustrations, and ceramics as well. Chagall had a career of 75 years. He died in France in 1985.

In 1944 Chagall’s beloved wife Bella tragically died from an untreated viral infection. Inconsolable, Marc Chagall turned his canvases to the wall, and Chagal was unable to work for almost a year.
