Marc Chagall, Bonjour Paris is a Lithograph with pastel drawings by the artist made in 1973. It is a rare pencil signed proof as this image was never made in a numbered edition. Paper Size: 36 x 23 1/4 inches. Image Size: 25 x 18 1/2 inches. It is signed, dated, and annotated “En Souvenir – St Paul” – which refers to Saint-Paul de Vence where he moved in 1949 close to the Matisse chapel. At the time, the French Riviera was an incredible art center frequented by many artists such as Matisse, Picasso, Magnelli, and Léger. From the end of the 1950’s, he participated in the project of creating the Maeght Foundation that opened in 1964 in Saint-Paul de Vence.
After Marc Chagall moved to Paris from Russia in 1910, his paintings quickly came to reflect the latest avant-garde styles. The Eiffel Tower was a frequent subject that served as a metaphor for Paris and perhaps modernity itself. Other motifs suggest the artist’s native Vitebsk which the artist contrasts with Paris, his new home in France. Chagall, however, refused literal interpretations of his work, and it is perhaps best to think of them as lyrical evocations, similar to the allusive plastic poetry of the artist’s friends Blaise Cendrars and Guillaume Apollinaire.
