Julian Opie – Elena and Cressie get ready for the party 3

Julian Opie, Elena and Cressie get ready for the party 3 is an original screenprint from a series of six screenprints on 4mm perspex with inkjet background sheets, presented in aluminum frames specified by the artist. This print is signed and numbered from the edition of 30.

Julian Opie is a leading contemporary artist, emerged as an influential figure on the British art scene in the 1980s, with a series of painted metal sculptures. Opie’s distinctive graphic style exists in the form of billboard posters, album covers and LED screens. The artist approaches the work by reducing the features that distinguish individuals from each other to the bare minimum. With just a few lines he is able to characterise what makes us unique and recognisable. Opie’s work has been exhibited extensively in galleries and museums around the world.

Six of Opie’s portraits are in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London: four portraits of the band members of Blur executed in colour print on paper, one of inventor and engineer Sir James Dyson rendered by inkjet on canvas, and a self-portrait, Julian with t-shirt, executed on an LCD screen with computer software.

Julian Opie is a contemporary British artist known for his distinctive depictions of figures, portraits, and landscapes. The highly stylized treatment Opie gives his subjects—whereby features are created by thick black outlines and filled in with solid areas of flat color—is a blend of Pop Art and Minimalism with a wholly contemporary sensibility. “The process of reading things as simulations but knowing at the same time that they are real is quite central to my work,” Opie has observed of his own art. Born in 1958 in London, United Kingdom, Opie studied with Michael-Craig Martin at Goldsmiths in London during the early 1980s. His earliest works consisted of painted steel sculptures exploring the relationship between visual and spatial observation. Over time, the artist has expanded his practice to include painting, installation, and cover art for albums. The artist’s works are part of the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and others. Opie currently lives and works in his hometown of London, United Kingdom.
