Georges Braque, Theiere et Raisins is an original color etching and aquatint. Signed and annotated “Epreuve d’Artiste” in brown crayon in the lower left margin.  This print is aside from the edition of 200. Vallier 1022.

French painter, collagist and sculptor Georges Braque is, along with Pablo Picasso, renowned as the co-founder of Cubism, which revolutionized 20th-century painting. In his work, objects are fragmented and reconstructed into geometric forms, fracturing the picture plane in order to explore a variety of viewpoints.

The objects used in his still lifes were highly personal to Braque, however, he did not reveal these meanings. Skulls, for example, were objects he painted repeatedly at the onset of World War II. In 1944, when World War II ended, Braque began to embrace lighter subjects like flowers, billiard tables, and garden chairs. His final series of eight canvases made from 1948-1955, each titled Atelier, or Studio, depicted imagery that represented the artist’s inner thoughts on each object rather than clues to the outside world. At the very end of his life, Braque painted birds repeatedly, as the perfect symbol of his obsession with space and movement.

In this exquisite still life, Braque replaces the cubist formality of his early compositions with an organic quality that would come to characterize his later works. In Theiere et Raisins, Braque provides a distinct foreground and background, including the table upon which the fruit rests as part of the overall composition, and offers the viewer a raised vantage point, as though the viewer is gazing down at the teapot and grape. The surface of the table is intriguing as it suggests a painterly quality and is streaked with an array of colors in varied hues, providing a further contrast to the solid coloring and graceful lines used to convey the teapot and grape.
